Seven routes up Africa's highest free-standing mountain. Route choice affects your summit odds far more than fitness does — we'll help you pick correctly.
The most popular route — strong scenery, good acclimatization profile, moderately busy camps. From $2,150.
Longer approach through pristine forest, the highest summit success rate of any route. From $2,650.
The only route with hut accommodation instead of tents — shorter, but a lower success rate given the pace. From $1,890.
Approaches from the drier northern side — good in the rainy season, fewer crowds. From $2,200.
The steepest, most direct route — best suited to experienced trekkers with prior altitude exposure. From $2,050.
The longest route, circling the mountain's quiet northern slopes for maximum acclimatization time. From $2,980.
Similar to Lemosho but starting higher via vehicle — a faster start with a steeper first day. From $2,100.
Overloading porters is common on budget climbs and it is dangerous. Every Mihayo's climb is staffed to the KPAP-recommended weight limit, with proper gear provided or checked, and a tip structure disclosed to guests up front — not left to guesswork at the trailhead.
Roughly: Lemosho and Northern Circuit run 90%+, Machame around 85%, Rongai and Umbwe in the high 70s, and Marangu often below 70% due to its compressed acclimatization schedule. More days at altitude is the single biggest lever you control.
No technical climbing is required on any standard route — it's a long, high-altitude walk. Cardiovascular fitness and a properly paced itinerary matter far more than climbing experience.
Park fees, camping/hut fees, a certified guide and required support crew, all meals on the mountain, tents and cooking equipment, and rescue fee contributions. Personal gear rental and tips are quoted separately.
Yes — this is one of our most requested combinations. We typically recommend 2–3 rest days after the descent before starting a safari, and Zanzibar works well as a recovery stop after either.
